They announced on Thursday afternoon that the Mavericks surf contest would take place on Saturday. Considered the Super Bowl of big wave surfing, 24 "lucky" contestants get to take on 20-30 foot waves off the coast of Half Moon Bay in Northern California. I found a boat Friday night and spent the day bobbing up and down while trying to keep surfers framed (and avoiding all the other boats, helicopters, wave runners, and misc. distractions). Great day and some pretty interesting shots. These guys are certifiable.

Through my work at Stanford, I now have a full season, all sports, credential to shoot Santa Clara University. My first assignment was the Broncos men's basketball game against San Jose State. Lighting in Santa Clara was surprising good, and the D3 really showed what it can do at ISO 1600. Very little noise and still vibrant color.

Practicing for Mavericks. The winter surf season is officially underway. I took the new D3 out in very challenging conditions (little contrast, on a coastal gray day). Still figuring out the focusing and exposure controls, but pretty amazing camera. The surfers were out in 14-15 ft. swells, about 1/2 mile off the coast. This shot was taken from the rocks on shore with the 300mm f2.8 with a 1.7x teleconverter. Given the lack of color on the day, I went with a monochrome conversion in post-processing.

Images from 101 on ramp. I walked out tonight up to the on ramp overpass to take some long exposure shots of the freeway traffic and the ramps. This shot caught an office building with the lights in the background juxtaposed with the infrequent cars joining the late night traffic on the freeway. I held the shutter open for 42 seconds.

Covered fencing at Stanford this evening. The flourescent lighting and very quick action was a real challenge for my D200. I had to push the ISO setting up to 1600 to maintain a 1/500 shutter speed which, with this camera, means lots of noise and not a very crisp image. That said, lots of fun and a few keepers. You can see a gallery with a sampling of the shots here: Fencing Gallery

My first assignment shooting for Stanford athletics: The Big Sail. Stanford beat Cal in all three events and this shot appeared on the Stanford Sailing home page. You can see a gallery with a sampling of the shots here: Sailing Gallery
